Kyle Baker always believed his family was happy, well happy enough. When he learns his mother is having an affair, his whole world is turned upside down. Now Kyle is cutting school, ditching baseball, ghosting his girlfriend, and just trying to keep it together. He does have his cousin Emily who he has always been able to confide in, but she lives hours away and has her own life, meaning she can’t be there precisely how Kyle needs her. With nobody else aware of his mother’s actions and his parents both trying to figure out how to deal, Kyle can’t help but feel caught in the middle of it all.
Despite the family drama that makes this story, it isn’t dramatic. While it is his mother’s actions that shape the story, this book is ultimately about Kyle and how he deals with both it and other things going on. Readers will have mixed feelings about the whole situation, as well as many other things that spring from it, from beginning to end.
