Book Review - The Dangerous Art of Blending In

πŸ“–Recommend for Grades 10 and upπŸ“–
by Angelo Surmelis
Life is hard for Evan Peters. His Greek immigrant mother is overly strict and sees him as a disappointment. His father is more understanding, but he tries hard to avoid conflict, especially between Evan and his mother. Then there is his best friend Henry, who has gotten very attractive over the summer and may see Evan the same way.
This book is not for the light of heart. Evan is a first-generation American of an abusive immigrant mother and readers who are uncomfortable with reading a story about abuse should avoid this book. Those who do decide to give this book a try will likely find themselves intrigued with a story of dealing with one's sexuality that is different from many others out in the world today.

Book Review - Goodbye Stranger

πŸ“–Recommend for Grades 6 and upπŸ“–
by Rebecca Stead
Years ago, Bridge was almost killed in a car accident and she has no idea how, or why, she survived. Her two best friends are Emily, who has got new curves and a sort-of boyfriend, and Tabitha, the crusader. Then there is Sherm, a new friend whose life changes as he gets to know Bridge. Seventh grade is about friendship and finding meaning for these four.
There are multiple narrators for this enjoyable story. Readers will likely find themselves relating to the characters in some ways as their seventh-grade experience is not that far from normal. One of the narrators is unknown and readers will enjoy guessing who they could be.

Teen Space Program

with Miss. Amanda

In honor of Black History Month, this month's Craft-Rageous craft was painting pictures inspired by African-American expressionist painter Alma Thomas.

Some teens chose to take creativity into their own hands and paint in there own style. Either way they all created beautiful art.

Book Review - When Dimple Met Rishi

πŸ“–Recommend for Grades 8 and upπŸ“–
by Sandhya Menon
When Rishi introduces himself to Dimple by saying they are going to get married, the result is an iced coffee in his face. Now what Dimple thought was her Indian parents loosening up and allowing her to attend her dream summer program, was actually a plan for her to spend time with the boy they want her to marry. Rishi is good with the arrangement and plans to spend the summer wooing Dimple.
This book is not a mushy romance but an awesome cultural romantic comedy. Readers will get both Dimple and Rishi’s side of the story and enjoy their different views on the situation they find themselves in.

Polar Bear Cupcakes

with The Baking Coach

Wednesday's snow made perfect weather for decorating cupcakes like an arctic animal. The Baking Coach showed teens how to turn boring (but yummy) vanilla cupcakes into almost to adorable to eat polar bears.

First icing their cupcakes with vanilla frosting, teens then used white, pink, black, and purple fondant to make the face to place on top.

As with most programs some teens decided to get creative with their supplies.

Each teen had three cupcakes that were both delicious and adorable to take home. Some though didn't make it out of the library as the makers couldn't resist snacking on one.

Book Review - The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion, and the Fall of Imperial Russia

πŸ“–Recommend for Grades 7 and upπŸ“–
by Candace Fleming
This is the well-known ending: Nicholas and Alexandria, the last Tsar and Tsarina of Russia were murdered, with their family, by members of the Revolution. But why? And what happened before? Find out about the Romanov family, the experiences of the peasants in Russia, and how the two worlds collided.
If you got your knowledge of this family from the 20th Century Fox’s animated film Anastasia (have teens your age even seen that film? but then again there is the musical which I’m sure is closer to the film than the real story), anyway, if you have seen the movie or musical, you are in for a rude awakening. The real story of this famous family is a lot more horrific than the beginning of the movie portrays. The history of the Romanov’s is an interesting one and there are pictures to aid in history.
