Book Review - 2 for 1 - This Is Our Story and The Lying Woods
📖Both Books Recommend for Grades 8 and up📖
by Ashley Elston
Five boys go hunting in the woods
but only four make it out alive. While only the shooter knows who killed Grant,
they all make a pact to keep quiet. Kate is devastated when she finds that the
boy she has been texting is dead, but she can help get him justice through her
internship. The deeper she digs, however, the more she discovers she may not
have known Grant as well as she thought.
This mystery will suck you in with
the first few pages. The chapters from Kate’s perspective are wonderfully
supported by the unknown killer in a way that is full of information, but leave
no hint of his identity. Readers will be turning the page to find out just who
shot Grant. The only flaw in this book is the idea of Kate being so involved in
this case is completely unrealistic.

When
Owen Foster’s mom shows up at his elite boarding school, his world is turned
upside down. Turns out, his privileged life has been funded with stolen money,
and now his father has disappeared, leaving Owen and his mother with nothing.
The business his father owned employed many people in the town, leaving them
with no jobs or money and hate towards Owen and his mom. The only place Owen
can find solace is at a pecan orchard where his father once worked and the man
running the place is willing to take a chance on him.
A riveting story that will keep
readers on their toes. The story alternates between Owen’s story in the present
and the summer of ’99 when his parents met. Although Owen may irritate readers
at times, he is ultimately a likable character and readers will feel for his
and his mother’s situation.

Book Review - Broken Things
📖Recommend for Grades 10 and up📖
by Lauren Oliver
Five years ago Summer was found dead
and everyone thinks her two best friends Brynn and Mia, along with her
boyfriend Owen, are the killers. As the town gears up to remember Summer on the
fifth anniversary of her death, Brynn and Mia just so happen to be reunited
after Summer’s death caused them to drift apart. When a clue is discovered by
Mia that may help find the real murderer, both girls reconnect with Owen and
the three try to find the real killer together and just how the book they were
obsessed with plays a role.
This mystery will truly leave
readers guessing. Woven into the story are snippets from the (made up for the
story) book Summer, Brynn, and Mia are obsessed with, as well as the parts of
the sequel they were writing before Summer’s death. The story also alternates
between Brynn and Mia’s perspectives of today with some of the past woven in.
At times Mia and Brynn can come across as irritating and jaded but it is
excusable based on their backstory.

Book Review - Pride
📖Recommend for Grades 9 and up📖

Afro-Latina American Zuri Benitez is
proud of her family, her Bushwick neighborhood and her roots. When a new
family, the Darcy’s, move into a newly built mini mansion across the street,
not only does Zuri’s neighborhood start to change, but her life in general
thanks to one Darius Darcy.
A
truly enjoyable remix of Pride &
Prejudice by Jane Austen. Zuri can be a bit of a pain sometimes but some of
the walls she built up are understandable. Her sisters are great supporting
characters, especially the twins, Kayla and Layla. Whether you are a fan of
Jane Austen or not, this is remix is a hit.

Book Review - A Very Large Expanse of Sea
📖Recommend for
Grades 9 and up📖
by Tahereh Mafi
It’s a year after the terrorist
attacks that took place on September 11, 2001, and life isn’t easy for high
school sophomore and Muslim-American teen Shirin who has been even more jaded
and cynical since the attacks. People are cruel to her when they see her
wearing her hijab, and see no issue taking their anger out on her. When she is
paired with Ocean James as a lab partner, he seems to take an interest in
getting to know her and Shirin finds herself questioning taking down the walls
she has built around her.
This book is an honest voice about
life after 9/11, written by a Muslim-American author. Shirin can come across as
rude and annoying but it makes sense based on the way most people treat her.
This is truly a wonderful read and should not be missed.

Book Review - Grenade
📖Recommend for
Grades 6 and up📖
by Alan Gratz
Ray
and Hideki are fighting for opposite sides of the island of Okinawa during
World War II. Ray is an American soldier, while Hideki is from the island but
part of the Japanese army. When the two find themselves face to face, a split
decision could be a fatal one.
Readers will enjoy getting both sides
of this superb novel. There is some military action that takes place but the
story is mainly about both boys and their feelings and journeys throughout this
part of the war.

Book Review - The Cheerleaders
📖Recommend for Grades 9 and up📖
by Kara Thomas
Five years ago, five cheerleaders
(who were also best friends) died in three different instances. Two of the
girls died in a car accident, two were murdered and Jen committed suicide.
Monica still can’t believe her sister committed suicide and feels there may be
more to the story. What’s more, she thinks the five girl’s deaths may be
connected.
There are a lot a complex parts to
this story making this one readers will have to pay attention to. At times
Monica can be a little annoying, but given her history that unfolds throughout
the story, readers will see why. Some readers may find themselves staying up
late to find out if Monica’s suspicions are correct.

The first official trailer for
Spider-man: Far From Home
is here!
This trailer gave me all the feels. I was so happy to see some awesome characters return for the sequel and some new ones. Also a familiar face to the Marvel Universe who wasn't in the first movie.
Peter Parker will return to the big screen on July 5, 2019.
(Although that is 2 months and 9 days after Avengers: End Game)

On Saturday teens were in for a treat when Chef/Dr. Robert Dell'Amore of The POWER of FOOD Productions came to show them how to make Gourmet Vegetarian Italian Bread Pizza.
Teens were shown how to make the crust, sauce and top with delicious cheese and other toppings. These toppings included onions, mushrooms and spinach. All this was done in a toaster oven and skillet.
After the demonstration, every one who attended got to try the pizza.

Book Review - Here We Are Now
📖Recommend for Grades 8 and up📖
by Jasmine Warga
Taliah’s
mom has always kept the identity of her father a secret though Taliah has done
some investing and discovers her father is a famous rock star, Julian Oliver. One
day while her mother is out of town, Julian shows up on Taliah’s doorstep
informing her that his father is ill. Taliah ends up accompanying him on a
journey to see her dying grandfather and meet the rest of her paternal family.
Taliah doesn’t want to make things easy for Julian suddenly showing up, but her
desire to know about his past with her mother causes her to take this journey.
While
the story is Taliah’s, the story of her mother Lena’s immigration to the United
States is wonderfully woven in as a big part of Taliah’s story. Lena’s story is
as told by Julian to Taliah and is a magnificent story within the story but
also a big part of the main story. An intriguing story of finding where one
belongs.
