Book Review - Anger Is a Gift
📖Recommend for Grades 8 and up📖
by Mark
Oshiro
Life isn't easy for Moss
being a black gay teen who has panic attacks. Life seems to be getting better
after he meets Javier, and a mutual interest begins. When metal detectors and a
police presence are brought to Moss's school he and his friends are outraged.
They decide to protest these changes, with help from the community. A protest
gone wrong leads to even more hurt and even death.
Parts of this story may
anger and frustrate readers, but in a way that this book should as many actions
that take place in this book are unjust. Teens who feel the actions of Moss,
his friends and community are a little out there should remember those taken by
the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Book Review - A Little Something Different
📖Recommend for Grades 9 and up📖
by Sandy Hall
Lea
and Gabe are just two college students that live in the same dorm and take the
same creative writing class. Are they in love? Well, everybody has their own
opinion- including their creative writing teacher, a Starbucks barista, a bus
driver, and even a squirrel on campus.
While
the story is about Lea and Gabe, neither are narrators of this book. Instead, there are numerous characters that give their perspective on the pair and their
relationship. The makeup of this story makes it more fun than a typical love
story.

Do you love playing video games? Ever wanted to make your own?
With Bloxels you can!
At last month's Techno Star Hour teens who attended used the BloxelsBuilder app, and a board with colored blocks to create their own video game.
Teens had to use the blocks to design their setting and obstacles based on what each color cube meant. For example pink is coded as a power-up and purple as an enemy. The next step is to design your board so instead of seeing a boring blue square you can see water or instead of a boring purple square you can see the enemy.
The game also allows for creating your own game character. In this case the colors of the cube just represent the colors that will appear and have no other meaning. The same goes for creating enemies, hazards, power-ups, and more.
For everything you create for your game on the board, you have to take a picture of it through the app to upload it for your game.
Once teens were done creating their game, they got to actually play it on the provided iPads.
Sound like fun? Look out for our monthly Techno Star Hour programs, especially June where we will be once again using Bloxels.

Fun Fact: Miss. Amanda is a huge fan of penguins and thus the inspiration for this winter themed craft of Felt Stuffy Penguins.
Teens had the opportunity to try their hand at sewing, in order to put together their penguin stuffy. Using pre-cut felt, each teen had to sew the white belly/face piece to one of the pre-cut black body pieces. Once done with that step they sewed on two button eyes. Then they sewed the two body pieces together leaving a small gap for stuffing. After they stuffed their penguin, the finished sewing it up and then drew on a beak using fabric markers.
Some teens decided to personalize their penguins as well, and we don't stop creativity in Craft-rageous.

Book Review - Vincent and Theo: The Van Gogh Brothers
📖Recommend for Grades 7 and up📖
by Deborah Heiligman
Tells
the story of brothers Vincent and Theo based on letters they wrote to each
other and others throughout their lives. Shares how the world would not know
Vincent van Gogh the artist had it not been for Theo.
If
you are not a fan of Vincent Van Gough or reading about artists and art history
you are likely not to enjoy this book. However, if you are a fan, this isn’t
one to miss, nor is it a bad choice if you need to read nonfiction for school.
The story of these two brothers is a fascinating one but not one you can easily
read through.
